In February 2026, Brookfield and CPP Investments entered a memorandum of understanding with TransAlta to evaluate a large-scale AI and digital infrastructure project (Data Processing Facility) at TransAlta’s Keephills  site in Parkland County, called the Boreal Technology Hub (Boreal).

Boreal is a proposed data centre development located on TransAlta-owned lands in Parkland County, west of Edmonton, Alberta. It has an initial power allocation of 230 MW supplied through Phase 1 of the Alberta Electric System Operator’s (or AESO) Large Load Process. Over time, that allocation is expected to expand, allowing the project to support the growing demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure that enables everyday services and local industries. From helping healthcare providers improve patient care to enabling more efficient agricultural practices and empowering small businesses to grow and innovate, these technologies have the potential to deliver tangible benefits that strengthen communities and support long-term economic development. 

Boreal is located directly south of the Keephills Generating Station. Phase 1 will be sited on a portion of Section 25-51-4-W5M (green highlighted area). Potential future phases could include Section 24-51-4-W5M and Section 13-51-4-W5M.

TransAlta will provide the site and power supply, while CPP Investments and Brookfield will leverage their expertise in financing and delivering large infrastructure projects to build the Data Processing Facility. Development activities will be led by BGRE on behalf of Brookfield and CPP Investments.
