Project Overview

In February 2026, Brookfield, CPP Investments and TransAlta entered a memorandum of understanding to evaluate a large-scale AI and digital infrastructure  project (Data Processing Facility), officially known as the Boreal Technology Hub (Boreal).

The project, located directly south of TransAlta’s Keephills Generating Station, has an initial power allocation of 230 MW supplied through the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) Phase 1: Large Load Integration. At full build-out, the Boreal Technology Hub is expected to provide up to 1,600 MW of capacity, supporting the growing demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure.

Project Location

Boreal is located directly south of the Keephills Generating Station. Phase 1 will be sited on a portion of Section 25-51-4-W5M (green highlighted area).

Potential future phases could include Section 24-51-4-W5M and Section 13-51-4-W5M.
